The Adaptation Compass in the City of Unna

From March 2014 to September 2014 five workshops took place together with the municipality of Unna, Germany, to elaborate the modules of the Future Cities Adaptation Compass. The staff of the water board Lippeverband accompanied the process under the leadership of the department of environment in Unna, personally by the head of department Dr. Joachim Schmidt.

The workshops brought representatives together from urban planning, environment, building, water, municipal utilities as well as farmers and land owners. The process created in seven months concrete results for the city to adapt to the expected consequences of climate change: structural (new storm water retention areas will be declared and built), organisational (the results of the Compass will be brought into the operation schedules of police and fire brigade) as well as contractual (risk clause is included in contracts of purchase of buildings/building lots).

The municipality assessed the Adaptation Compass as a very useful tool and thanked the Lippeverband for jointly elaborating the local adaptation strategy for the city of Unna.
