JOINT EVALUATION SESSION „Future Cities“
The Future Cities partnership met for the Joint Evaluation Session in Essen, from 17th to 18th September.
The evaluation of the roll-out of the Adaptation Compass was done based on experiences from practitioners: Dr. Schmidt from the environment department in the city of Unna, Lippe catchment/DE, reported about the implementation of and results from the Adaptation Compass in Unna. Chantal Lass, Sustainability Officer at Hastings Borough Council/UK, presented their experiences with coastal communities in East Sussex, especially Lewes and Newhaven.
New approaches for participation and financing concepts were discussed at the example of the development in the city quarter Coehoorn of the Dutch city of Arnhem. David Willemsen, representative of the Coehoorn initiative, illustrated how to build a network that is supported by the stakeholders in the neighbourhood. Financing aspects were added from the Belgium partner: Nathalie Garré from West Vlaamse Intercommunale (wvi) shared their experiences about group purchase in activities related to trigger implementing measures for more energy efficiency.
The meeting became especially entertaining when new ways to visualise adaptation measures were on the agenda: Two films were shown by wvi about sustainable aspects of the city quarter De Vloei, a website and communication activities from the city of Nijmegen were shown in the light of the application for the “Green Capital of Europe”, and finally the communication campaign about decentralized flood protection measures in Unna was illustrated by large-size eye-catching posters that are actually displayed around the inner city of Unna. The discussion went beyond the Future Cities project while sharing experiences from joining the European initiative “Mayors Adapt”. The partners from Hastings, Arnhem and Nijmegen reported their approach how to join, and guests e.g. from the city of Essen were very interested in the concrete transfer of know-how.
