The energy study and strategy for the city of Arnhem

For the city of Arnhem, the energy consumption and available sustainable energy sources in Arnhem and region are inventoried and mapped. The results are contained in a geographic information system, which shows the energy demand and available sustainable energy sources like sunpower, windenergy, geothermal, heat/cold storage, biomass and so on.

In addition, an energy study is performed. This energy study shows the in general preferable solutions and what criteria thereby to handle. Many of the criteria are programmed in software, so that it can be combined with the card information in the geographical information system.

With the geographic information system and the energy study, an strategic tool is created. A strategic tool that support developments in the energy supply of the city. It is possible to consider a development at the level of a street of neighbourhood, but it is also possible to view the whole city in one time and calculate the impact of developments.

The geographic information system and the energy study is also linked to the UHI study. The urban heat island is an effect due the energy balance of the city. That energy balance is largely determined by solar radiation and only slightly by the energy released. This small part is impressionable and can lead to decrease of maximum temperatures. The system will therefore also be used to determine the effects of energy measures on heat stress and so to decrease the maximum temperatures.
