Tiel develops educational program climate change & water
The municipality of Tiel has developed an educational climate change program for primary schools. In an attractive and interactive way, children learn about the necessity to limit the use of fossil fuels, the benefits of sustainable energy and the effects of climate change. The program gradually narrows its scope from global to local effects in the eastern part of Tiel and it highlights the green- and water measures that are being taken there. European Youth Parliament for water visits Tiel
The Netherlands was host for the 10th european youth parliament for water form the 14th - 20th of march 2011. The aim was to make young Europeans (from 16 to 21 years old) aware of the issues connecting the climate change with water. The parliament was organised by Solidarity Water Europe in partnership with the Province of Gelderland. On the 16th of march, the European Youth Parliament visited Tiel. They were first welcomed at Waterboard Rivierenland in Tiel and in the afternoon the Future Cities representatives of Tiel showed the measures for green, water and energy that are being taken in the eastern part of Tiel. A visit to the radar post of the National Waterboard, a trip on the river Waal and a visit to the locks of the Amsterdam Rhine channel, the biggest in Europe, was also included. Tiel East, drier and nicer
The Netherlands is rich in water. This has attractive aspects, but also gives nuisance from time to time. In Tiel East, a residential district, the water nuisance is substantial. The district lies between the dikes of the Waal and the Amsterdam-Rijn Canal. Problems with seepage water occur everywhere along the Waal, especially at high water levels. As a result of climate change and higher water levels more seepage water will be created in the future. To keep the district livable the water nuisance must really decrease. The water issue and the wishes to utilize the district more intensively, cannot be viewed separately. Drier, better and nicer are interrelated.
The municipality has asked a large group of experts to help us think: Department for Public Works and Water Management, the province, the district water board, housing corporations, project developers, consultancy firms and district residents. The best ideas were translated into a preferred scenario. With this scenario the water nuisance will decrease in these circumstances and the agreeable features of the water will actually be emphasized. Space for more houses and public green will be created as well.

The municipality of Tiel wins award for climate project
The municipality of Tiel won an award with a proposal for a climate project in the eastern district of Tiel. The project combines the construction of a sustainable energy supply for the new development in the district with a lowering of groundwaterlevels and the remediation of groundwater pollution. The competition for climate engineering projects was issued by Arcadis. They chose to include this climate project of Tiel because water and energy comes together in an innovative way.
The coming years 600 new homes will be built in the eastern district of Tiel. Furthermore, a primary school will be expanded and there are ideas for the construction of a residential boulevard. To heat and cool this new development in a sustainable manner groundwater can be used. Such a system is increasingly used elsewhere. Innovative in the project for Tiel-East is the combination that the municipality will investigate cold and heat storage in combination with the lowering of groundwaterlevels and the remediation of groundwater pollution. Together with the municipality of Tiel specialists will develop a businessplan for the project.
