The Project : sustainable city quarter in Ieper
WVI will develop a sustainable quarter in Ieper (size = 7 ha). The investments will be done in the public areas of the quarter in order to make the whole quarter sustainable in all aspects: energy, water, ecology but also social sustainability and sustainable use of space, materials, dealing with waste, etc. Adaptation to the climate change is the key element of the strategy together with the mitigation aspect in order to prevent further damage to the climate.
WVI aims at overall sustainability from the planning phase until actual sustainable living. With this particular project the focus lies on energy - water - green structures (separated sewer system, collective rain water catchment systems, etc).
Concerning energy, the project consists of (collective) renewable energy systems for the quarter, being combined electricity/heat production and solar panels for the apartments. WVI wants to combine water and ecology through a network of surface water, infiltration buffers which will connect the different parts of the quarter and also connect to an adjacent housing quarter and to the main roads (green/blue links). An existing pond will be integrated in the whole as part of integrating the new development in the existing landscape. For the greening of the site, local plants and trees are chosen for the lanes and the green spaces.
- complete site: 7ha
- combined electricity/heat production: 2 units
- solar panels: 10200 kWh/year
- network of infiltration buffers: 1150 m²
- green/blue slow links: 9000 m²
- development park/squares: 3690 m²
The actual masterplan for the sustainable quarter in Ieper is a key document for the further development. A description of the methodology is available for download here.
