Heat island effect and heat stress - Conference in Arnhem, NL


On May 26th 2010 a Dutch National Conference on "Heat island effect and heat stress" took place in Villa Sonsbeek, Arnhem/NL. The Conference was organised by the Future Cities partners Arnhem, Nijmegen and Tiel in close co-operation with the two Dutch National Programmes on climate change ('Kennis voor Klimaat' and 'Ruimte voor Klimaat'),  the City of Rotterdam and CROW.

After a welcome by the Alderman of Environment of the City of Arnhem, Mrs Margreet van Gastel, about 70 representatives from Dutch municipalities, the provinces, waterboards and the national ministry VROM joined in an interesting meeting. First both professor dr. L. Katzschner of the University of Kassel (Germany) and Ms Chao Ren (PhD) from the Chinese University of Hong Kong informed the audience about the Urban Heat Island effect and the current state of reseach in mapping this effect around the world. Afterwards the state of affairs in Dutch research on the Urban Heat Island effect was presented by the Future Cities project and the City of Rotterdam. The Future Cities project showed the first Urban Climate Analysis Map, or heat map, of the city of Arnhem which was set up using national and international knowledge.
