Heat-scan of the City Region Arnhem Nijmegen
Last summer Dakwacht made a succesfull flight over the City Region Arnhem Nijmegen to investigate the heat radiation at night. Within the so called 'heat-scan' an infrared picture was made to determine the intensity of heat radiation. The pictures show very clearly that infrastructure radiates a lot of heat. This is due to the fact that roads and squares absorb a lot of solar heat during the day. On the other hand meadows radiate no heat at all.
Buildings show an intermediate intensity. The heat-scan gives valuable information about what contributes to the heating up of cities during heat waves, the Urban Heat Island effect. Researchers of Wageningen University and Research Center (WUR) are now analysing the images.
