The Lippeverband is one of 11 water boards in North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1926 in order to solve the problems caused by increasing industrialization and volumes of sewage, hygenical problems including epidemics and underground coal mining in the Lippe catchment. The Lippe catchment has a size of 3,280 km2 and 1.4 Mio. inhabitants (427 inhabitants/km²) and can be described as a mixed urban developed area. The Lippeverband is a self-managed public association and as such a non-profit company which is controlled by its members.
Since the foundation in 1926 the Lippeverband works together with the Emschergenossenschaft. Both water boards are based on special legislation with the tasks
- elimination of sewage / treatment of domestic and industrial waste water
- flood protection and stormwater management
- maintenance and ecological development of water bodies
- supply of process and industrial water
- management of drainage- and sewage systems
- treatment of sewage sludge
